IN THE LAND OF GODS
&
LANA DEL REY
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have discovered that while it is possible for an artist to make music without any reference to their religion, Lana Del Rey is not one of those artists. Through reading interviews, listening to songs by Del Rey and watching her music videos, it is evident that religion is something that has a lot of meaning in her life.
The songs that Lana Del Rey writes are somewhat on the risqué side and the fact that she has brought religion and God into almost 75% of her songs says something about how she feels about those subjects. While her references are subtle, they are still noticeable. I first noticed it when I was listening to her EP, Paradise. Out of the 8 songs on the EP, Del Rey mentions God or religion in 6 songs, and that’s only on an EP. On her new album, Honeymoon she even has a song entitled Religion and one called God Knows I Tried.
So, like many artists, Lana Del Rey does have religious themes within her songs but there is no controversy. The mentions of God are subtle and are there because religion and God is what has inspired her. It’s what has gotten her through the hardest parts in her life so why wouldn’t she want to share that with the world?
